In Price Hill, Cincinnati, at 3428 Warsaw Ave., sits a two-story 10,000 square-foot older brick building.
It was in sad shape the first time I walked in and looked around. It was dim even with the few remaining lights turned on. Most of the windows were covered by layers of walls installed at various past seasons of renovation. The rooms reeked of must, caused by the numerous leaks in the roof. The floor was broken and uneven in many places from settling and abuse.
It used to be a vibrant bowling alley on the main floor and upstairs an R&B dance club. In later years, it became an urban boxing club and upstairs an after hours strip joint. I heard rumors of a shooting happening just before it closed.
But there was a great potential in this building. An offer was made to the owner and on the day of the closing there was new ownership with a hopeful vision of this 100-year-old building.
One might hope that you could snap your fingers and see this building change immediately. But renovation done well is costly and takes time. The stories we could tell as walls were removed and new issues discovered that needed attention. It is amazing what problems are hidden behind crumbling walls. However the new owner was determined to finish what was started and see the vision completed.
The building is a wonderful metaphor for the people who walk through the doors of 3428 Warsaw Ave. People in need of new ownership... or more precisely acknowledging that God is their true owner.
On the day of the closing, on the day of confession from the heart that Jesus is Lord and Savior of their lives, the renovation work begins by the Owner, the true Owner Who has a wonderful vision for all of our lives.
It takes time as walls are removed, issues exposed and the healing that comes from the One Who loves us most.
